Please see below for answers to questions about our name change, how it affects the community and how we are going to move forward in this exciting new era.
Why has Mercy College become Mercy University?
Changing our name to Mercy University demonstrates the breadth of Mercy’s programs with more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs, six schools, and a multi-campus and online structure. The change also reflects Mercy’s continued growth including the recent launch of the School of Nursing and our investment in CERTiFi by Mercy University to meet the demands of the current and future workforce.
How is Mercy able to become a university?
The New York State Board of Regents recently changed its requirements for higher education institutions to become a university. Mercy College meets these new requirements and in March, the College applied to become “Mercy University.” Mercy was notified in June 2023 that the application was approved. Effective August 22, 2023, Mercy College became Mercy University.
Will the website URL change?
No. The website will remain mercy.edu.
Will the Mercy logo change?
Yes, Mercy will be launching a new logo and brand to reflect the name change this summer.
Will Mercy update its signage at all three campuses to reflect the name change?
Yes. Signage will be updated on an ongoing basis.
Will Mercy still have three campuses in Dobbs Ferry, Bronx and Manhattan?
Yes, Mercy will still operate three campuses.
How will this affect my enrollment?
Your enrollment status has not changed, but Mercy’s name has. Mercy College is now Mercy University.
Will the University name change affect the number of credits I need in order to graduate?
No, it will not.
Will the University name change impact my program’s professional accreditation?
No, it will not. The accredited programs will notify the accrediting body of the name change.
Will the University name change affect tuition costs or financial aid?
No, it will not.
Is there anything I need to notify lenders involving my financial aid?
No. The University name change will be made at the federal and state levels and financial aid data will be automatically updated.
How should I list the school on my resume?
Current students should update their resume to “Mercy University” to reflect the institution where they will earn their degree.
Will my email address change?
No. Email addresses will remain @mercy.edu.
Will my student ID still be valid or will I need a new one?
Current Mercy College student IDs will remain valid for a transitional period. We will be sending out communications later this fall with information about new IDs.
Will I need to replace my Mercy College parking pass?
Current Mercy College parking passes will remain valid for a transitional period. We will be sending out communications later this fall with information about new parking passes and how to register for them.
If I need to make a payment by check, who do I make the check out to: Mercy College or Mercy University?
You should make your check out to Mercy University.
If I have already sent a check made out to Mercy College, do I need to re-issue it to Mercy University?
If you have already issued your check as “Mercy College”, we will still accept it and will be able to accept checks made to “Mercy College” after August 22. However, it is best to use “Mercy University” starting on August 22.
When will Mercy University attire and gear be available?
The Mercy Bookstores will have merchandise available starting August 22, 2023.
Do I need to update my teaching materials to reflect the changeover to Mercy University?
The learning management system (Blackboard) will be updated with new branding, but faculty should update any other teaching materials (e.g., syllabi, handouts, videos) that are created with Mercy’s name or logo on them.
Do I need to ask journals and publishers to update my existing scholarly publications to reflect my new affiliation as Mercy University?
No. However, bibliographic databases and academic social network sites like ResearchGate should be notified so they can track past publications as institutionally grouped together under Mercy College prior to the change, and Mercy University after the change.
If I have a publication in press, can I tell journals or publishers to change my affiliation to Mercy University?
Yes, for any publications with a release date of August 22, 2023 or thereafter.
Do I need to ask scholarly and professional societies of which I am a member to update my affiliation as Mercy University?
Yes, please notify them to ask that they update their databases.
If I am speaking at a conference or public forum, should I notify the organizers about the change in my affiliation for the program to Mercy University?
Yes, for any conferences or public forums taking place on or after August 22, 2023, use Mercy University.
I have a grant from an external funding body (private or public), or otherwise regularly work with external partner organizations. Do I need to tell them about this change?
Mercy’s Office of Sponsored Programs will inform all external funding bodies about the change and will inform other external partners. However, in the course of regular conversations and correspondence with external funding bodies or other external partners, they should be notified of the change.
Will my staff ID still be valid or will I need a new one?
Current Mercy College IDs will remain valid for a transitional period. We will be sending out communications later this fall with information about new IDs.
Will I need to replace my Mercy College parking pass?
Current Mercy College parking passes will remain valid for a transitional period. We will be sending out communications later this fall with information about new parking passes and how to register for them.
How do I get new business cards, envelopes, letterheads, and other materials such as promotional items that say Mercy University?
Business cards, envelopes, letterhead and other materials that require the new name and logo can be ordered after August 22, 2023. The process to order these items will remain the same.
Do we need to update our email signatures?
All email signatures will need to reflect the new name and logo starting August 22, 2023. Instructions on how to make the change will be provided.
Do we need to update our voicemail messages?
Yes. Voicemail messages will need to change to say Mercy University starting August 22, 2023. Instructions on how to make the change will be provided.
Will my email address or phone number change?
No. Email addresses and phone numbers will not change.
Will the name change affect direct deposit or anything related to my paycheck?
No. Lenders will be notified and the Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as the Federal Tax Identification Number, will remain the same. After August 22, 2023 paychecks will say Mercy University instead of Mercy College.
Am I responsible for notifying any vendors or accreditors or updating contracts?
No. This will be addressed centrally. However, when speaking or corresponding with outside parties after August 22, 2023, they should be made aware of the change.
Are we still The Mercy Mavericks?
Yes. And the mascot will still be The Mav.
Will the NCAA Division change now that we are Mercy University?
No. Mercy University remains in Division II of the NCAA.
Is there anything I need to notify lenders involving my financial aid?
No. The University name change will be made at the federal and state levels and financial aid data will be automatically updated.
Will I need to get a new diploma with Mercy University on it?Alumni who were conferred their degrees prior to the name change do not have to replace their diplomas. If, however, alumni would like to have their diploma read Mercy University, they will be able to request a new diploma once the diploma vendor has updated the template. Sign up to be notified when Mercy University diplomas will be available for order. There will be a $30 fee for ordering a replacement diploma.

If I graduated in August, will my diploma say Mercy College or Mercy University?
The diploma will state Mercy College as the degree granting institution because the degree conferral date was prior to the official name change.
How should I list the school on my resume?
Alumni who graduated before the name change, can use either “College” or “University.” Additionally, alumni can list it as “Mercy University (formerly Mercy College).”
Alumni should use "Mercy University” for employment applications that require official documentation related to their degree (such as a transcript), so that it matches the name in those documents..
Will this change impact the EIN number or how payment should be remitted?
Mercy’s EIN number will remain the same. Payments should be made to Mercy University. However, in the short-term we will still be able to accept checks made out to Mercy College.
