Alex Root has a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Systems Biology. His research is guided by the One Health Concept that the built environment, natural environment, and organisms are all interconnected. Research in his lab uses a combination of bioinformatics, data science, field work, and experiments to study diseases in ecosystems and organisms – towards an ultimate goal of a sustainable future. Here are two current research projects:
Characterizing how eutrophication and pollution affect communities in local waterways.
Studying pathways in organogenesis and cancer using data from several organisms, including zebra fish models.
Students interested in ecology, marine biology, or aquatic botany would be a good fit for the 1st project, and those interested in genetics or health sciences would be a good fit for the 2nd. Students should email him or stop by his office hours Mon. & Wed. 1:30 - 3 in BX.3225B to discuss and learn more.
