After completing her degree in electrical engineering and working in her chosen field as an engineer for IBM, Dr. Schenkel returned to school to begin her veterinary education at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Following her graduation, she completed an internship at Sacramento Animal Medical Group in Carmichael, California and an additional year of practice at the North Shore Animal League Hospital for small animals.
In 2000, she joined the staff at Animal Medical of New City and has become a pivotal member of the staff. She has devoted her clinical career to the care of her patients and the unique bond they share with their owners. She has a special interest in critical care, pain management and surgery. In 2007, she completed her training in veterinary rehabilitation therapy and became the only veterinarian certified in Rehabilitation Therapy in Rockland County. Dr. Schenkel obtained her certification in veterinary medical acupuncture in 2010, and continues to provide her expertise in complementary pain management techniques as part of her general small animal clinical practice.
Dr. Schenkel is an active member of organized veterinary medicine, having served as president of the Westchester/Rockland Veterinary Medical Association (WRVMA)for three years (2017-2020). Currently, Dr. Schenkel holds the position of treasurer of the WRVMA as well as serves on the NYS Veterinary Medical Society Licensed Veterinary Technician Committee, whos mission is to provide support for the licensed veterinary technology profession at the state level. In addition, Dr. Schenkel is an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society and the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians.
In 2011, Dr. Schenkel joined Mercy University as an adjunct professor for veterinary pharmacology. Dr. Schenkel became a full time assistant professor, teaching the veterinary pharmacology, clinical pathology and management courses, in 2012. In 2015, Dr. Schenkel was appointed Program Director and continues to successfully lead the Veterinary Technology Program while teaching pharmacology, veterinary clinical nursing and small animal general practice externship. Dr. Schenkel is an active member of the Association of Veterinary Technicians Educators, often presenting at the Association's symposiums.
Throughout her time at Mercy University, Dr. Schenkel has been dedicated to the development of the service learning curriculum in the Veterinary Technology Program. She played an instrumental role in the design and implementation of the Global Veterinary Experiences course. This course provides students with the opportunity to provide veterinary medical care for wild and domestic species in an underserved region outside of the United States. In addition to being an instructor in the course, Dr. Schenkel also provides clinical support in the field.
Her commitment to service learning also extends outside the program as a primary co-instructor and clinician for the Small Animal Veterinary Experience course which takes place in Belize. This course provides international veterinary medical students with the opportunity to provide veterinary medical services to villages in Belize that otherwise would have no access to veterinary care. In addition, the veterinary medical students provide educational outreach which provides the local community with information about proper preventative care for their pets.
