Maria Vilanova, M.S., LMFT, is a highly accomplished clinician, educator, and leader in the field of mental health. A graduate of the Mercy University Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) Program, Maria brings over a decade of expertise in providing therapeutic services to individuals, couples, and families across public and private sectors. Her clinical focus spans trauma recovery, life cycle transitions using family systems theory, cross-cultural relationships, and leadership development.

Maria’s career reflects a deep commitment to serving vulnerable populations. For the past eight years, she has worked extensively with military personnel, veterans, and their families, addressing the unique challenges they face, including mental illness, addiction, and the complexities of reintegration. Her empathetic approach has been instrumental in fostering healing and resilience within these communities.As Director of Clinical Internship, Maria is passionate about mentoring the next generation of therapists. She partners closely with students, offering guidance and support to enhance their academic and professional development. Known for her collaborative and approachable style, Maria is deeply invested in fostering confidence and competence in emerging clinicians.

Currently, as Assistant Director at Scarsdale Edgemont Family Counseling Service in Scarsdale, NY, Maria oversees the Scarsdale Community Youth Services Project, managing a range of programs that promote youth mental health and well-being. In addition to her supervisory role, Maria provides direct clinical services to teens, adults, and families, addressing a variety of challenges, including anxiety, depression, family conflict, and life transitions. She is dedicated to expanding accessible mental health resources and forging partnerships that strengthen community support networks.

Beyond her professional roles, Maria is an advocate for work-life balance and self-care. She finds joy in spending quality time with her loved ones and exploring nature through walks with her rescue dog, Jaxon. She also enjoys cooking, reading, and traveling, which allows her to recharge and remain present for her clients and students. Maria’s philosophy centers on the belief that caring for one’s own needs and desires is essential to providing compassionate and effective support to others.
