Mercy College Hosts Annual International Film Festival April 25 - 28

Mercy College is hosting its 23rd annual International Film Festival, which brings exclusive viewings of films from around the globe and special guest speakers to its Dobbs Ferry Campus, from April 25 – 28. Each screening will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall and will be followed by a post-film discussion. Admission to the festival is free.

"The Mercy College International film festival is a highly anticipated event that has become a popular tradition for many in the surrounding community,” said Steven DeRosa, senior instructor for Mercy College’s Media Studies Program and film festival coordinator. “We look forward to welcoming community members on Mercy’s campus once again to celebrate film as a medium for global storytelling and to promote discovery of diverse cultures.”

The films screened during the International Film Festival span various genres, including comedy, drama and satire. “We believe that the film festival offers something for everyone,” said DeRosa.

The films that are included in this year’s festival are:

Tuesday, April 25: “Güilas”

  • A 2018 Costa Rican film directed by Sergio Pucci that explores Costa Rica’s varied cultures through the eyes of children.
  • In Spanish with English subtitles.
  • A Q&A with Mercy College Assistant Professor of Spanish Dr. Elise Arnold-Levene will follow the screening.

Wednesday, April 26: “Happy Cleaners”

  • A 2019 Korean American film directed by Peter S. Lee and Julian Kim that celebrates immigrant survivorship, explores the Korean American experience and speaks to the value of family. 
  • In Korean and English with English subtitles.
  • A Q&A with Happy Cleaners co-directors Peter S. Lee and Julian Kim will follow the screening.

Thursday, April 27: “Our Lady of the Nile”

  • A 2019 film made in France, Belgium, Rwanda and Monaco directed by Atiq Rahimi about the social dynamics and increasing conflicts that led to the Rwanadan genocide, shown on the backdrop of a girls’ Catholic boarding school.
  • In French and Kinyarwanda (with English subtitles).
  • A Q&A with Mercy College Professor of Religion Dr. Jude Aguwa will follow the screening.

Friday, April 28: “The Good Boss”

  • A 2021 dark satire from Spain directed by Fernando León de Aranoa and starring Javier Bardem that centers on the boss of a factory, who is keen on winning a business award but runs into obstacles.
  • In Spanish with English subtitles.
  • A Q&A with Mercy College Assistant Professor of Business Dr. Orlando Barreiro will follow the screening.
