Painting by World Renowned Artist Synthia SAINT JAMES Unveiled at MercyManhattan Ribbon Cutting

At the MercyManhattan ribbon cutting that took place on October 24, 2019, a painting by world renowned artist Synthia SAINT JAMES was unveiled at the newly renovated campus.

Now displayed on the third floor of MercyManhattan, the painting, titled “UNSTOPPABLE”: MercyManhattan, symbolizes the enlightenment achieved, fulfillment reached and gratification felt when Mercy students meet their goals through higher education.

The painting is also inspired by the nurturing, enthusiastic and empowering approach that MercyManhattan’s leadership, faculty and staff radiates – thereby continually encouraging and uplifting the spirts, ambitions and commitment of the College’s diverse student body.

The piece features students mingling, advisors wearing PACT program backpacks, students studying and working on computers, students seated at tables with refreshments, graduates greeting their families, among other scenarios. Approximately 95 subjects of different colors and shapes make up the painting, which speaks to the celebrated diversity of Mercy’s growing student body, faculty, staff and community partners.

Synthia SAINT JAMES is a multicultural visual artist, author, speaker and educator most celebrated for designing the first Kwanzaa Stamp for the United States Postal Service, the 2016 Kwanzaa Forever Stamp and the international cover for Terry McMillan’s “Waiting to Exhale.”

She is celebrating her 50th anniversary as a visual artist. She sold her first paintings at the age of 20 in New York City and has garnered numerous awards including the prestigious Trumpet Award, a Coretta Scott King Award and her Honorary Doctorate from Saint Augustine’s University.
