In coordination with National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Mercy College’s School of Liberal Arts and the Mercy Cybersecurity Education Center is hosting their annual commemorative conference, titled “Emerging Technology and Security Challenges,” on Friday October 30, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. via Zoom.

The month of October is designated National Cybersecurity Awareness Month by the United States Department of Defense. Now in its 17th year, the month-long effort raises awareness about the importance of cybersecurity, ensuring all Americans have resources to help them stay safe and secure online.

Following the Department of Defense’s call, Mercy’s conference, now in its 11th year, aims to spread the Department of Defense’s message - to be aware of how cybersecurity is related to our daily lives - with help from practitioners in the field and academics.

“We are trying to convey to the general population the importance of understanding the risks of technology and using technological tools and platforms wisely. And, we’re trying to emphasize that cybersecurity is about critical thinking – not just technology, but how you assess the general world,” said Zhixiong Chen, director of Mercy College’s Cyber Center.

The conference also acts as an annual gathering of alumni of Mercy’s cybersecurity degree program, faculty members, neighboring community colleges, current students and community members. It brings Mercy’s degree program to light and facilitates relationship building with recruiters and major leaders in the industry.

The Mercy program, designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security, looks forward to hosting a virtual version of this annual event.
