Literature and Language at Mercy University

The Department of Literature and Language hones students' ability to think creatively and critically, to communicate clearly and persuasively, and to recognize patterns in human behavior and history—skills that are valuable for almost any profession, and for life itself. Students in the department explore literature and cultures from around the world, develop and discuss ideas, refine language and writing skills, and altogether strengthen their voices through studies in English, Spanish, Creative Writing, Literature, Cultural Studies, and Writing & Rhetoric.

Red Hyacinth

Red Hyacinth Journal is an annually-published, perfect-bound literary magazine that showcases the writing and art of Mercy University students and alum. The journal’s first issue was produced in 2018 through the generosity of the family of the late Valerie Lewis, a former instructor in the English program, and is named for her favorite flower. Each year Red Hyacinth features the diverse creative work of MercyU students of practically every major. Student editors from the Departments of Literature & Language, and of Communication & the Arts, collaborate on the editorial decisions, design, and concept. The journal’s student editors receive hands-on experience in the editorial and production processes as they select the creative work (poetry, drama, nonfiction, fiction, and art) in a blind-review process, prepare the magazine for press, and communicate with the college community regarding its release.
